Idex publishes the first report of its mission committee
In 2025, Idex took a major step by becoming an entreprise à mission. In 2026, the group is publishing the first review of this commitment: promises kept and results measured.
970,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent avoided, 64.7% renewable and recovered energy in heating networks, an EcoVadis score of 82/100 placing Idex in the world's top 5%: the energy transition isn't declared, it's built.
Together we accelerate
"The fight against climate change is the challenge of the century. We're not content to simply take part in it. Our ambition is to accelerate it."
Heat accounts for half of final energy consumption in France. Two-thirds of it still comes from fossil sources. This is what Idex has been working to change for more than 60 years, with renewed ambition since September 2025, when the group officially became an entreprise à mission.
Our purpose, written into our bylaws:
"Accelerate the energy transition by promoting local, low-carbon solutions."
Solutions built on energy sobriety, energy efficiency and the development of renewable and recovered energy. Plural solutions, tailored to the needs of each client and each territory.
Our mission objectives
🌍 Act for the climate
Accelerate the energy transition through local, low-carbon solutions that are available right now: from geothermal energy to biomass, from waste heat to solar power.
🏙️ Act for local areas
Strengthen the energy autonomy and resilience of cities, industries and buildings, creating value and jobs that cannot be relocated.
🤝 Act for our employees
Give our 6,500 employees a safe, inclusive and stimulating work environment, equal to the challenges they take on every day.
Why become an entreprise à mission?
Thomas Le Beux, CEO of Idex
We're taking this step at a time some describe as an 'ecological backlash.' For us, it's also a way of affirming that our commitment to decarbonization makes sense for the planet, that it's backed by a solid business model, and that it meets real, large-scale needs for our clients.
Five years after our mission was first formulated as part of the Idex 2030 corporate project, the results achieved show that this mission is not a mere statement of intent. It's the backbone that shapes our strategy and our operations.
Our commitments in action
-
🌍 Pillar 1: Act for the climate
-
A production mix in full transformation
Geothermal energy, locally sourced biomass, waste heat recovered from waste incineration or industrial processes, solar photovoltaics: Idex deploys a pragmatic, technology-agnostic strategy, choosing from the low-carbon solutions available the one that best meets the needs of the client and the local area.
Flagship projects:
Bordeaux Métropole: the largest contract in Idex's history
To massively decarbonize heating in the southern districts of Bordeaux Métropole, Idex is developing a heating network with exceptional features: 200 GWh of heat produced, 40 km of network, more than 20,300 home equivalents connected, a carbon content of 30 gCO₂/kWh and more than 1 million tonnes of CO₂e avoided over the life of the contract. Geothermal energy and biomass make up 77% of the mix. The rest comes from biogas and electricity with guarantees of origin, thanks to the first long-term biomethane purchase agreement (BPA) for a heating network in France. For 30 years, subscribers will benefit from 100% renewable gas produced 15 km from the boiler plant, at a price shielded from market fluctuations. Total investment: €134 million, including €9.9 million in support from Ademe and €1 million in citizen crowdfunding.
Levallois: a data center's waste heat serving a neighborhood
By combining deep geothermal energy with waste heat recovered from a data center, this pioneering heating network project will give Levallois access, from 2029, to local, low-carbon, competitive and secure energy. Ultimately, it will deliver more than 120 GWh a year, with 75% renewable and recovered energy, an unprecedented rate for such a dense urban area, and a 30% reduction in the price of heat.
Feurs: a battery run by artificial intelligence
Idex has installed a 6 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) that responds within seconds to signals from RTE, the French grid operator. A fully decarbonized flexibility solution that replaces peak-load thermal power plants: 2 MW, 6 MWh, 3 hours of autonomy, zero direct emissions, and more than 1,000 homes supplied over a 15-year partnership. Given the success of this first phase, Idex will double its capacity and has already commissioned a similar system in Ondes (4 MW).
Bourg-Saint-Maurice: a heating network designed for the mountains
In the heart of the Alps, the hospital, schools and residential buildings relied on individual oil-fired boilers. Idex proposed the first public heating network in the Tarentaise valley, a fourth-generation network designed to handle extreme seasonal demand, reconciling the energy transition with tourist appeal just a few years ahead of the Olympic Games.

🏙️ Pillar 2: Act for the sustainable development of local areas
-
Local circular economy solutions
Beyond their climate impact, Idex's projects strengthen the autonomy and resilience of local areas by making the most of their own resources, creating local jobs and protecting biodiversity.
Hedgerow wood (Groupe Bel): a biomass boiler plant partly fed by wood from pruning nearby hedgerows, providing extra income for local farmers while preserving these biodiversity reservoirs.
Vine wood (Épernay): 10% of the heating network's biomass comes from vine-pruning wood, emblematic of the Champagne landscape and culture.
Brewer's grain (Heineken): the steam needed to brew beer at the Mons-en-Baroeul plant will soon be produced from agricultural waste generated by the brewing process.
Agro-pellets (La Défense): boilers fully converted to replace fossil fuels with agricultural residues, partly transported by rail to the towers of France's largest business district.
Protecting biodiversity
8 industrial sites engaged in voluntary biodiversity action plans in 2025 (2030 target: 20 sites). A national partnership with the Fédération nationale des conservatoires d'espaces naturels (FCEN). 100% of industrial sites covered by a physical climate risk assessment. At the Robert organic recovery center in Martinique, nature-based solutions strengthen the site's resilience to heavy rain and heat: more than 130 local plant species and a planted filter that recovers around 2,000 m³ of water a year.
Progressing with our supplier network
An average score of 66/100 in 2025 for suppliers assessed under the EcoVadis responsible purchasing program, with 77% of them improving their score. 2030 target: 80%.

🤝 Pillar 3: Act for a safe, inclusive and stimulating work environment
-
Safety: Idex's priority
Building a shared safety culture relies on a set of concrete actions: regular reminders of the "6 golden rules," training sessions, preventive site visits, safety talks and the "Ma Sécurité" app, which lets every employee report near misses and hazardous situations in real time. The result: the frequency rate of workplace accidents resulting in time off has more than halved since 2019.
Inclusion: a conviction backed by action
A signatory of the Diversity Charter since 2021, Idex rolls out concrete action plans to support disability inclusion and gender equality. 24.4% of management positions are held by women (+2.4 points since 2022, 2030 target: 28%). 94% of employees with disabilities had an annual review to assess their support needs (2030 target: 100%). 85 employees are involved in mentoring programs.
A stimulating environment, grounded in our mission
Energy transition jobs offer full employment and genuine purpose. To help raise awareness of these careers, Idex offers work-experience placements for middle school students and runs awareness events starting as early as that age. Since 2019, work-study programs have grown significantly: apprentices now make up 7.2% of the workforce (+2.6 points vs. 2022). 2,500 employees have taken part in a Climate Fresk workshop, run by 13 in-house facilitators. Following discussions with the mission committee, three new actions were adopted: extending the onboarding program to one year, developing health-prevention initiatives tailored to technicians over 50, and professionalizing post-hire support for employees recruited through workplace integration programs.
The mission committee
An independent perspective that pushes us further
Set up in September 2025 and chaired by Anne de Bayser (co-chair of Groupe SOS), Idex's mission committee brings together 8 members: 7 external figures and 1 employee representative, appointed for a renewable two-year term. Its secretariat is run by the group's director of engagement.
Its role: assess how Idex is implementing its commitments and support the group's strategic thinking as an entreprise à mission.
In 2025-2026, the committee:
• Held 3 plenary sessions with senior management
• Conducted 9 thematic sessions in sub-groups
• Took part in the jury for the Idex Victoires awards (2 members)
• Hosted 4 masterclasses open to all employees
• Visited a site operated by Idex: the Boulogne-Billancourt heating and cooling network
"The mission committee could feel the sincerity of an approach focused on action and continuous improvement."
